Book 4: The Ponder Heart by Eudora Welty
The Ponder Heart was a book I had never heard of. I went to my local library and while aimlessly browsing I stumbled upon Welty’s Loosing Battles. I will, say what attracted me was it 70s jacket. So after reading the back of it I proceeded to check it out along with The Ponder Heart and Delta Wedding (Welty’s first novel).
I started with Delta Wedding, after about 50 pages I wasn’t into it. It was too descriptive and easy for me to get lost in the details and miss what was actually happening. So I put it down and picked up The Ponder Heart.
The Ponder Heart reads so much differently than Delta Wedding. While still sticking to her style, Welty manages to give you a great picture of the setting and the character while still writing a compelling story.
Her influence is Southern life and family. Something that I know well being from Georgia. Her characters are lovable and strange and their simple life makes you wish you had a house in Mississippi in the middle of a farm. The Ponder Heart is a great tale of small town gossip, broken hearts and loyalty. It was over all a good read and I’d recommend it to anyone who is wanting a simple escape.
